Winter Engagement Photo Tips

This pose and composition makes my heart so happy!

So, I have to admit - snow is SO beautiful! It's cold. And I cannot stand the 50 million layers we have to wear upon leaving the house (okay, a LITTLE exaggerated), But boy, does snow look good in engagement photos!

And that is why when couples ask "What do you think about winter engagement photos?" we say, "Go for it!!!!"

In the next few weeks we have 4 engagement sessions (or e-shoots as I like to call them) booked, so, keeping my promise to be more present on social media, I figured why not write a blog about a few tips for taking winter e-shoots; how to make them more comfortable, how to ensure that you stand out against the snow, etc.!

Remember, e-shoots, no matter the season, are meant to be taken to represent you as a couple, the story of you and we want them to showcase your love! I hope you find these tips helpful!

Let's take a look at our top 5 tips for your winter e-shoots!

1) Choose a very, very wintery location.

By "Winter Friendly" I mean a location that shows the beauty of winter. Evergreen trees, snow as far as your eye can see, and different types of landscapes (i.e. hills, flat areas, roads, tree filled areas. etc.). If winter in your area is TOO wintery (meaning winds that make you believe you could actually fly away) choose a cozy coffee shop or a hotel with a beautiful fireplace and sitting area. Get creative and have fun!

2) Use the beauty of snow!

So, both of you look absolutely stunning - allow the snow to compliment you! Use it as a backdrop to your photo! So make sure these photos are taken on a day where the ground is covered by a blanket of white!

A lot of times if we have scheduled a winter e-shoot and we wake up to a day where the snow looks more...brown... than white - we will ask our couple if they want to reschedule to another day or go for it today! We have no problem with rescheduling last minute if that means we can capture the vision that we had in mind upon scheduling a winter e-shoot!

3) Choosing what to wear.

I always suggest to couples to wear colours that will stand out against the white snow - the contrast is always more beautiful to look at that way! I also suggest to wear colours that compliment each other. So if you decide to wear dark blue, have your partner wear black, grey or maroon.

Something that people may not think about is actually wearing clothing that you feel comfortable in. This means that if you decide to wear jeans and stiletto boots but have never owned a pair of jeans (yes, I know people who don't wear jeans..I know, crazy right!) then don't wear jeans! Wear something that portrays you and who you are individually and as a couple!

4) Have backup warm clothing.

Picture this, you start off a session, you're so excited, filled with adrenaline and then you realize that you can't feel your toes from those cute heels that you're wearing. You can probably stand this for about 15 minutes - then we always suggest that you bring a change of clothes for the "next outfit" that are warmer. For example, sweaters, ponchos, boots, jeans, etc. The world is your closet (sigh, I wish!).

Many times, if our couples are open to it, closer to the end of the shot we will have them sit or lay down in the snow. If you have extra clothes in the car it's no problem as you can change into them for a warm car ride home!

5) Take breaks!

If we're taking these photos on a slightly extra windy day, we will make sure that sometime in the middle of our session we turn our car on for 5 minutes, and then have everyone jump in for a break. This warms up fingers and red noses and re-energizes you for the remainder of the shoot!

Oh my, are we ever excited for the shoots these next few weeks! If you have yet to book your e-shoot with us and after reading this you're convinced that you want a winter e-shoot then YAY! E-mail us at brideandbowphotography@gmail.com to book yours in today!
